In addition to the homework, don’t forget to complete the aforementioned Step 1 of Project 1, which involves looking at the possible project paintings and sending me an e-mail with the title/artist of the one you want to do. I need this information NO LATER than Thursday, January 28 so that I can prepare painting surfaces for class next week.
Further Instructions for Homework Step Three
Some of you may be very comfortable searching for and posting images. For those who would like a little guidance, however, instructions are posted below.
To find an image of an artwork that uses a full range of values in an interesting or meaningful way, I recommend using Google image search. Yes, yes, Google is an evil empire that is no doubt partnering with Walmart and Monsanto to turn us all into mindless Matrix drones, but darn if it isn’t a convenient search engine.
You may also want to look through image-based, tag-searchable social media sites like Pinterest, Tumblr, Instagram or Flickr to get initial ideas. Keep in mind though, that if you find something you like on one of these sites, you may have to go searching for better quality images than the platform provides.
Google Image Searches Step-by-Step
- Go to www.google.com.
- Enter your search terms in the Google search bar. You may have to try several phrases before you get results that interest you. Try different mediums, artist names, subject matters, etc.
- Select “Images” in the menu of options for filtering results.
- Scroll through and look for things that strike your fancy. It’s not a bad idea to jump from one search topic to another using ideas generated by the images you are seeing. For example, maybe you find an image you like that turns out to be a lithograph. You can then start a new image search for lithographs, which may lead to exciting unforeseen possibilities.
- Once you find something you like, click on the thumbnail in the Google image search, and then click on “View Image” from the detail box that opens. This will bring you to web page specifically for the image. Make sure the image you’ve chosen is of a reasonable size. It doesn’t have to be super high resolution, but it shouldn’t be a tiny 100px thumbnail either.
- Copy the url (web address in the top search bar) by selecting it the entire thing and then hitting Control-C (Wiindows) or CMD-C (Mac). The url for an image should end with .jpg, .png, .gif or another image file extension. If your url ends in .htm or .html, you haven’t pinpointed the image specific web page. In that case, review step 5.
Adding a Comment to the Blog Post Step-by-Step
- Go to www.zartnerds.wordpress.com.
- Log into the WordPress site if you aren’t already. An option to log in with your username and password is at the very bottom of the page.
- At the top of this blog post under the title “Homework Due February 2”, you should see a link that says “Leave a Comment”. Clicky click.
- The browser will shift you to a reply dialogue box that looks like the one pictured below. Copy the url of your image into this dialogue box.
- Hit return and type your explanation as outlined on the homework sheet.
- Click “Post Comment” under the dialogue box.
- If you have never commented on this blog before, your comment will have to be approved before anyone (but me) can see it. I get e-mail notifications when new comments are pending, and I will go into mod mode as soon as the opportunity presents. In the meantime…
- Sit back, relax and feel superior to all the people in the world who didn’t just post an awesome comment on a blog.

This painting is one of my favorites by Marie-Denise Villiers! The piece is called “Young Woman Drawing” 1801 and this to me is just so breath taking. I am not sure if this is a really good picture of value, but I though it was with the shadows in the back ground as well and the darkness v.s lightness that is being shown in the painting. The light just bring certain spots on her as well as a few objects around her to live almost and just her face alone even though its has light hits of shadow it still brings out her face, hair, and the clothing that she is wearing. I just can’t stand the amount of detail in her outfit with the light hitting it the way it is just makes it stand out so much which makes me love it even more. Even out in the distance you see the two people standing there outside that I believe that the women in the painting might be drawing has detail as well. With this painting, I feel if there was not the drab, the sketchbook, or the window with the broken glass with the two people it would just be lacking. This is such and eye catching piece, but I also relate because she is an artist and so am I!

FYI, i edited your comment so the image would show up directly. To do this, I played right click games until I got to an image-specific page whose url ended in .jpg. I then copy and pasted. Don’t worry that you did something wrong, though. The Met’s website is a little tricksy when it comes to viewing straight-up images, which is kind of strange when you think about it.

Thank you! 🙂 I was having a really hard time with it and just kind of gave up because it was to late, I was tired, and just to frustrated with it.
I did the project overall correct, right? I wasn’t sure because I didn’t think my picture had that much of value in it then the other ones I found.

Seems to have a pretty wide range of values to me. You did Step Three of the homework correctly. I can’t speak to Steps One and Two until you hand in your sheet tomorrow.

This artist used value in a great way they made the main ball darker then the out side of the image. It added more depth to it i think and it also did a great job with showing more detail. I think they chose to do this to show the detail and darkness of the room. To me it looks like a therapy room like where you would go to talk about your feelings and what is wrong with you. It adds the feel to the image to make you wonder what really happened in that room or what is going to happen. The fact that they have the darker colors in the middle in the sphere makes what your looking at better because its almost like your looking into the world that it is. The fact that they show the hand holding the globe of the world inside makes you feel like you are holding the world inside. It lets you enter the piece yourself. You are now the one holding the room. You are looking at yourself in a way. Your mood changes to wonder why are you there. What is he saying to you and what kind of questions will you have to answer. You start to question everything your looking at but yet you still find enjoyment in your fears. It makes you think about what you don’t want to. It brings back the dark past of yourself but yet you still cant look away you want to know but you don’t want to either. The back ground behind the globe is flat it has a gradient on it but it doesn’t have a lot of details or really any at all. All the detail in the picture is only in the sphere. which brings you back to how you feel the background is lighter then the sphere but it is still kinda dark in a way. The hand is the lightest there and having it against the dark background makes it stand out more and i think that’s why i feel like you become a part of it.

This picture caught my eye because of the strong contrast between the light tones and the dark tones. Even the use of the more middle tone of the sky only add to the dramatics of the event depicted. The dark shows, without question, the impending doom that was the storm was set to strike the people on the boat. But then the light gives a kind of hope that better weather is to come and the people on the boat will survive the dark. The value helps set the story and give you the fear and the possible hope of the artwork.

Since this seems to be affecting more than one person, I better tell you guys how to do it. 🙂
Usually, when you click an image online, you are rerouted to the full-size image file hosted on its own web page. However, some websites, like DeviantArt, use behavioral code to view a larger image within the current page. This is convenient for someone who is just wants to look at pictures, but not so convenient for us. WordPress will only display a pasted url (link) as an image if that url is for the image file web page itself. You can tell if this is the case by looking at the web address. Image-specific web addresses end with an image extension like .jpg, .png or .gif.
So how to fix it? Follow the link you posted (or go to any image on a site using this kind of code), and right-click the image (ctrl/left-click on Mac). A dialogue box should pop up from which you can choose “Open Image in a New Tab”. Once you’re on the image-specific web page, try again to copy and paste the url in your comment. You can edit the comment you already made using the links underneath or create a new comment. FYI, the pic still shows up as a link in edit view. Similar to Facebook, it only gets pretty-like after you click “Post Comment” to go live.
If you run in to issues, post a reply or e-mail me, and I’ll do my best to walk you through troubleshooting steps.

One of my favorites of Van Gogh The Bedroom or Bedroom in Arles. Van Gogh uses a lot of different values together in this masterpiece. One example is the different shades of green in the windows going from light to dark on the frames. Another example is the texture of the flooring using another green then mixing with brown, but keeping the same value. I believe He done four versions of this masterpiece. He uses many colors that are warm and cheerful. The darker values outline the bed and base of the room. The blue values give the room a cool feel. He used all ten values in this piece. One more thing before I keep yammering the light value underneath the pictures like I said before the different shades of the same colors in the same area. Enjoy your day Doug E Fresh

I chose this image because of the strong contrast in the values and how the right of the image is very bright and the left is darker. I really like how the mast of the ship seems to split the image so the colors stay to each side while still making the image whole. Stacy B

This is Petunias by Georgia O’Keeffe. I have always been a big fan of her paintings. I love flowers and she is famous for them. I was very happy to find this painting because it does a great job at representing value. There are darker areas where the flowers were in the shade and there are also areas that are much lighter where the sun was shining. She was inspired to paint this in her time spent at Lake George where she was surrounded by nothing but nature. Since the petunias are more of a dark purple it helps to have a light background. It creates contrast and it allows the viewer to view the different values. The background is not just a single shade of blue, there are different tones to it.

I changed my mind. I’ve chosen Ivan Aivazovsky’s ‘The Ninth Wave’. First of all I really love the way the sun draws your eyes to the center of this image, it’s almost hypnotic. He also uses value to illustrate texture in the waves, along with the depth between the waves in the foreground, middle, and the waves in the background. I don’t really know anything about this painting other then the painter’s name and the work’s title – but I think that gives more credit toward the artist’s use of value to portray a certain mood. when I first look at this painting, I’m first taken in by the beautiful sun shining through the clouds, and I get a hopeful or peaceful feeling. Then my eyes move left toward the murky and dark foreground with the choppy and seemingly violent waves, and I get a feelings of fear, worry, and courage. The two combined portray a certain mood in me that the men on that hunk of wood may have been feeling at the time: “Things may be rough out here on this hunk of wood in the middle of the ocean, but there’s hope to be had out there.”

I choose this artwork because it uses a wide range of value. The sun is the lightest value; the town is the darkest value. The value is expressed in the color variation in the artwork. It starts out as white then shifts to yellow and red in the 2-3 in value. The deeper blues are an 8-9 in value. The city or island is the darkest value and is represented with a black color. I also like how the light starts in the sun and radiates outwards through the painting.

I chose to discuss the use of value in Rembrandt’s painting, The Night Watch, because of the artist’s pronounced use of value throughout the work of art. When looking at the image, the contrast between the lights and the darks is very apparent. However, the entire range of the value scale is utilized. When looking at the most contrasting values, there appears to be three central characters of the painting: the two men in military clothing and the small, girl/angel-like figure to the left of the men. Highlighting these characters lets the viewer know that they are of greater importance than the characters hidden in the shadows. After a bit of internet reading, I learned that the “golden girl” is actually not meant to portray a real character but is a sort of visual representation of the whole company. Rembrandt utilized the lighter range of the value scale by painting the white chicken she is holding, leading to her slightly darker, yellow dress, and just a bit darker than that, her golden hair. The background to the girl and the other main characters utilizes darker value ranges and creates images that get lost in the shadows – unless the onlooker chooses to make a conscious effort to look into the darkness. It is interesting to mention that the title of the painting is misleading. Rembrandt was not painting this image at night. The painting had simply acquired years of tarnish and grime. When it was restored in both 1946-47 and 1980, the layers of dirt were removed to reveal a daytime image with the sun streaming in from the left. The sun, shining in from the left, highlights the faces and clothing of the girl and the men. It also illuminates the drum to the far right of the painting. Finally, I want to mention that it is interesting that one of the central characters is wearing black and yet, he pops out to the onlooker’s eye because of the contrasting light values on his collar, sleeves and face.

I chose this because there is great value in this painting. The trees caught my eye. The red leaves against the foggy background with the sun coming through and reflecting on the water.

I’m choosing “Parade of Red Trees” by Rio. This picture uses a range of value to establish a strong yet delicate idea of nature in the fall. The artists use of shading, particularly around the leaves demonstrates the fragility of fall. Red leaves are barely holding on. Deep value is also used in the tree trunks so as to show that while the leaves seemingly will fall, the density and thickness of the tree will set a foundation for further growth and of course regrowth of said leaves. The fog is wonderfully done and this is what most assuredly caught my eye. Combining more distant trees with a harmonious fog illustrates and encapsulates the beauty of this piece.

I chose this one because the water jumped out at me and caught my eye. Even though the water isn’t completely blue but I can see the values in the water and to see the reflections to know that it is water. There are different types of blue/grays in the water which are different values of them. Also how the birds are blue, you can tell that there are different tones and values of the light blue that the birds are.

The reason I picked this art piece, because it shows very light, bright colors. These colors are inhanced by the different values of blue. The blue values scale appear to range from 1,2,3,4 to 7,8, and 10. The piece altogether shows a well balanced with the values used, making a great work of art.

I chose this picture because I love this artist, Shanna Trumbly, from Oregon. I think she uses a lot of value in all her paintings. She has a lot of value range in the flowers. The value here shows the light shining directly down on top of it. The leaves and vines also have a wide range of value going through a 2 to about a 7 on the scale. I think the value of the blue background helps bring out the range of values in the flowers and leaves. All the values are very intense next to each other creating a very dramatic piece. I feel that even if the colors were greyscale it would still show a lot of drama.
I wish I could just post all her paintings! She’s so awesome! Look her up!
