Setting up an External Hard Drive for Mac

electro-kitten.jpg

If you didn’t have your portable hard drive today in class, please get it before our next meeting. And by before I mean BEFORE. You know before? The sworn enemy of during and after? Yup… THAT before.

By the way, I know a few of you are struggling financially, and I’m sympathetic. However, you won’t be able to complete the workload for Digital Photography without the drive. It’s like our textbook.

One you get the drive, please use a Macintosh computer to set it up. If you don’t have your own Mac, you can visit the classroom during open lab hours. Formatting the drive is your responsibility if you missed the walk through in class. The links below will take you through the steps necessary.

Be aware that formatting a hard drive will ERASE ALL DATA currently on the drive. This is not an a problem for new drives, but if you are repurposing an old one, make sure you first backup any data you want to save.

Backup Directions

Formatting a drive on Mac OS 10.10 or earlier

Formatting a drive on Mac OS 10.11 or later

Not sure which operating system you have on your Mac? Click on Apple in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. Select “About This Mac”. The OS version appears near the top under the OS name.
